Eppendorf Launches First CO2 Shaker with Integrated 180°C Sterilisation

Eppendorf just announced the CellXpert CS220, the first shaker on the market to feature a CO2 incubator and an integrated routine for 180°C sterilisation. Designated for mammalian shake flask culture projects, this device completes prevention against contamination and increases efficiency in operation in two key features that mark a milestone in cell cultivation technologies.

Better Contamination Protection and Productivity

Shake flask cultures are used for the production of complex recombinant proteins, for generation of viral vectors in mammalian cells, and for starter cultures of bioreactors. Among the most important issues in the above processes was the occurrence of contamination caused by viruses and Mycoplasma that can disturb vital timeline and budget. The CellXpert CS220 was developed to confront this problem directly.  Unlike traditional CO2 incubator shakers that lack sterilization features and are mainly for use in microbiological applications, the CS220 has a significantly higher level of sterility and cleanability.

Eppendorf Innovation Leader, Maria Mattern explains, “Our new CellXpert® CS220 was developed particularly to accelerate mammalian shake flask culture projects and to accommodate this trend’s growing demands for higher contamination prevention standards.” The importance of sterility is what sets the CS220 apart in its class from other microbiological shakers with optional CO2 control, according to Mattern.

Innovative Features for Smooth Operation

The German made CellXpert CS220, has several unique features with the aim of improving contamination prevention and operating efficiency. Among these innovations include sterilization at 180°C, ensuring a very high level of contamination control. The stainless steel chamber is also characterized by the elimination of drive wheels, cover sheets, cables, and heating fins, thus helping reduce areas where contaminants are likely to accumulate and accelerating disinfection cycles by manifold.

Besides the sterilization features, the CS220 boasts up to 40% more flask capacity than other options, with the best platform size-to-footprint ratio available compared to other CO2 shakers. In addition, labs may handle a larger volume of samples in the same amount of space with less risk of contamination, improving overall productivity and efficiency.

With the CellXpert CS220, Eppendorf is expanding its successful cell culture portfolio along with incubators, shakers, high-speed centrifuges, and bioprocess equipment.
