The AllTrials campaign, launched by the UK-charity Sense about Science in January 2013 (alongside partners including the Ben Goldacre, the BMJ, the Cochrane Collaboration and the James Lind Initiative) calls for all past and present clinical trials to be registered and for their methods and summary results to be fully reported.

The rationale behind AllTrials is that when a substantial portion of clinical trials remain unregistered or unpublished, it distorts the evidence base that clinicians, regulators and patients rely on. For example, negative results are less likely to be reported, and trials deemed unsuccessful or unprofitable may never see the light of day —severely skewing our understanding of what treatments work and which don’t.

Since its launch, the campaign has gathered tens of thousands of individual signatures and hundreds of organisational endorsements worldwide, and has helped push for legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at increasing transparency in trial registration and results reporting.
