Primo Discovery Service, developed by Ex Libris Group (part of Clarivate), is a cloud-based library discovery platform that enables users to search across a library’s print catalogue, electronic resources, institutional repository and open-access content from a single unified interface.  It is designed for academic libraries and consortia looking to offer a seamless discovery experience for students, researchers and staff.

Who it serves & how

Primo serves libraries, library administrators, students, faculty and researchers. Key use cases include:

  • A library researcher uses Primo’s search box to locate relevant journal articles, ebooks and institutional repository materials without switching between multiple databases.
  • Library administrators integrate Primo with backend systems (such as their library management system) so that holdings, availability and user accounts are synchronised.
  • Faculty or students benefit from one discovery interface that covers print books, electronic journals, digital collections and open access resources, thereby reducing fragmentation and improving resource visibility.

Key features & value

  • Unified search across collections: Primo combines metadata from the library catalogue, electronic-resource holdings, open-access repositories and external indices so users can search “everything” from one place.
  • Advanced user interface (Next Discovery Experience-NDE): Primo offers a modern UI optimised for mobile and web use, with features like conversational search, recommendation widgets and streamlined result displays.
  • Integration & APIs: The system integrates with Ex Libris’ library services platform (Alma) and other systems, and offers open APIs for customisation and embedding in campus portals.
  • Customisable relevance/ranking: Libraries can fine-tune how search results are ranked and how local holdings are prioritised, thereby aligning the interface with local user needs.
  • Support for open access & open data: Primo includes support for open-access content, knowledge-base integration and linked-data experiences.

Considerations & limitations

  • The effectiveness of Primo depends significantly on the quality and harmonisation of metadata across all integrated collections (catalogue, electronic resources, repository).
  • Implementation in a library may require significant configuration—especially when integrating local holdings, user authentication, custom branding and mobile access.
  • While Primo is very strong for discovery, for highly specialised or domain-specific search (e.g., deep bibliometric analytics), additional tools may still be needed.
  • Licensing, subscription or service-provider costs will vary by institution, smaller libraries must assess the cost-benefit especially in relation to open-source alternatives.
