Analytik Jena AG has presented the world´s first Hepatitis D virus (HDV) test. The kit, which is CE-IVD certified, quantifies the virus RNA. The RoboGene® HDV RNA Quantification Kit 2.0 is the last product developed by a company with proprietary diagnostic tools for hepatitis B and C.

Hepatitis D is caused by the circular enveloped Hepatitis delta virus. HDV is a subviral satellite as it can only propagate in the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) either by coinfection or superinfection. Both viruses combined cause acute liver failure that develops into cirrhosis, cancer and death in 20% of the cases.

The RoboGene® HDV RNA Quantification Kit 2.0 has been designed for routine diagnostics of viral nucleic acids. It involves DNA extraction from HBV and RNA extraction from HVD and posterior detection. The kit is being adapted to the company´s automation platforms. After purification, the kit was validated with the INSTANT Virus RNA/DNA Kit, developed by the subsidiary company AJ Innuscreen. From serum and plasma samples, the INSTANT Virus RNA/DNA Kit simultaneously obtains high-purity viral RNA and DNA, providing a basis for the output parameters of the RoboGene® products.
