The Funder Registry (officially the “Open Funder Registry” or OFR) is an open metadata service from Crossref that provides persistent identifiers (IDs) for grant-giving/funding organisations worldwide.
It allows these funders to be referenced in publication metadata such that the relationship between research outputs and their funding sources can be clearly tracked.

Why it matters

  • It increases transparency in research funding: when an article or dataset acknowledges a funder, you can identify exactly which organisation provided support.
  • It enables funders, institutions and publishers to track outcomes of their grants (e.g., publications) by linking the funder metadata to research outputs.
  • For publishers and metadata services, consistent use of funder IDs improves discoverability, analytics and open-infrastructure quality of the scholarly record.
  • It aligns with broader initiatives (open research, FAIR data, persistent identifiers) by treating funders as first-class entities in the metadata ecosystem.
