iAnnotate is a proprietary mobile-annotation application developed by Folia (also referenced as under Branchfire, Inc.) that allows users to read, markup, and share PDFs and other document formats (including Office files, images and web-page captures) on iPad and iPhone.

Why it matters

  • It offers a robust tool for document annotation and markup: highlighting, drawing, stamping, commenting, underlining, free-hand ink—all tasks important for reviewing scientific manuscripts, figures, presentations or supplementary materials.
  • It can help labs, researchers and students manage and collaborate on documents on mobile devices: annotate on the go, export/share annotated files, integrate with cloud storage (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive) which is useful for modern mobile workflows.
  • For presentations, pitch decks or manuscript drafting: having polished annotations, margin notes, revision tracking is beneficial for clear communication and peer review preparation.
  • If your lab uses tablets (iPads) for reading papers, revising figures, or data review sessions, iAnnotate provides a tailored environment optimized for iOS and Apple Pencil support.

How it works (in broad strokes)

  1. Install iAnnotate on an iPad or iPhone from the App Store. App Store
  2. Open a document (PDF, Office file, image, web-capture) from your cloud storage or email into iAnnotate.
  3. Use the annotation toolbar: choose a tool (pen/ink, highlighter, stamp, comment) and mark up the document. iAnnotate supports detailed annotation types (shapes, voice clips, photo inserts, signature).
  4. Organise your document library: the app supports tabs for multiple documents, custom tool-bars, file management including create/rotate/reorder pages.
  5. Share your annotated document: export as annotated PDF (others can edit annotations in compatible readers) or flatten annotations for final distribution.
  6. If working in a team or enterprise context, use “iAnnotate for Intune” (or enterprise version) to enforce data controls, secure storage, integrate with Microsoft 365/OneDrive.
