Clontech Laboratories Inc. expands its Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) solutions portfolio by launching SMARTer Universal Low Input RNA Kit for Sequencing. The new kit will be useful for sequencing low input samples with compromised RNA.

The new kit combines Clontech’s patented SMART (Switching Mechanism at 5’ end of RNA Template) technology for synthesizing double stranded cDNA with random priming, facilitating transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) from degraded total RNA samples that are obtained from formaldehyde fixed paraffin embedded tissue (FFPE) or Laser Capture Microscopy (LCM) preparation techniques resulting in samples of either poor quality or without polyadenylated mRNA.

RNA-Seq allows researchers to analyze qualitative and quantitative gene expressions in cells by studying the whole transcriptional activity in cells at nucleotide level. Gene expression profiling using RNA-Seq plays an important role in biomedical research. The use of SMART protocol minimizes the risk of sample contamination to preserve the original message as it doesn’t require much handling. The entire protocol can be performed in a single tube without a separate adaptor ligation step due to the efficient incorporation of known sequences at both ends of the cDNA during first strand synthesis.
