ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a free, persistent digital identifier that distinguishes an individual researcher from every other researcher, and stays with them across name changes, institutional moves, language variations and career transitions. It is maintained by ORCID, Inc., an independent non-profit governed by its member organisations, and it has become the closest thing the research world has to a universal author identity layer.
The problem it solves is mundane and pervasive. Author names are not unique, are transliterated inconsistently, and change over time. A researcher publishing as “J. Smith”, “Jane Smith” and “Jane Smith-Okonkwo” across a career fragments into three people in every downstream database. An ORCID iD — a 16-digit identifier expressed as a resolvable URL such as https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097 — attaches the work to the person rather than to a string.
What it actually does
An ORCID record functions as a machine-readable research CV. It holds employment and education history, funding awards, peer-review activity, and a works list covering journal articles, preprints, datasets, software and patents. Crucially, entries can be written by trusted organisations rather than by hand: when a publisher, funder or repository is granted permission, it pushes verified metadata directly into the record. An assertion that arrives this way is provenance-stamped, which is what separates ORCID from a self-reported profile on a networking site.
The public API is open and free, which is why ORCID iDs now appear throughout the scholarly infrastructure — in Crossref and DataCite metadata, in manuscript submission systems, in grant applications, and in institutional repositories and CRIS platforms.
Why it is effectively mandatory
ORCID has moved from convenience to requirement. A large number of publishers require an iD from submitting or corresponding authors, and a growing set of national and institutional funders require one on grant applications. Open-science and research-assessment policies increasingly assume a persistent identifier exists for every named contributor. In practice, a researcher without an ORCID iD in 2026 will hit a wall at submission or application time.

Limitations
ORCID is an identity layer, not a discovery tool or a social network — it will not find literature, measure impact, or replace a reference manager. Records are only as complete as their owner allows, and a neglected record with an empty works list is common and unhelpful. Some fields still rely on manual entry, and the auto-update integrations need to be switched on deliberately rather than working by default. Institutional membership, which unlocks the write-enabled integrations organisations need, is a paid tier, even though individual use is free.
Verdict
Registration takes about two minutes and there is no reasonable argument against it. Create the iD, connect it to Crossref and DataCite auto-update so the record maintains itself, and add it to manuscript submissions and grant applications as a matter of routine. It is infrastructure rather than a product, and the cost of not having one is now measured in blocked submissions.
