OpenScience is the open-source answer to the commercial AI science workbench, built by Synthetic Sciences and developed in the open on GitHub. It targets the same workflow as Claude Science — literature, data, code and writing in one environment — without the subscription or the closed stack.
What it does
Being open source, it can be self-hosted, inspected and pointed at whichever model you choose rather than a single vendor’s. For labs with sensitive or embargoed data that cannot leave the institution, that is not a philosophical preference but a hard requirement. The trade-off is that you assemble and run the stack yourself.
Strengths

Limitations
It is a young project moving fast, and it carries the usual open-source cost: you provide the setup, the compute and the maintenance. Polish and documentation trail the commercial equivalent. Evaluate it against Claude Science on what your lab can actually operate, not on licence terms alone.
