Opentrons builds liquid-handling robots at a price point that put automation within reach of ordinary labs rather than only screening facilities, and it runs them on open-source software with a Python API. It is the reason a single-PI lab can credibly automate a repetitive protocol.

What it does

Protocols are written in Python or assembled in a graphical designer, then simulated before they touch a physical deck. Because the API is open and documented, protocols are shareable and reviewable artefacts — an automated method can be published alongside a paper and actually reproduced. Modules add temperature control, magnetic separation, shaking and thermocycling.

Strengths

  • Substantially cheaper than traditional liquid handlers.

  • Protocols simulate before running, catching errors cheaply.
  • Modular hardware covering common molecular-biology needs.
  • Works with PyLabRobot for hardware-agnostic protocol code.

Limitations

It is not built for the throughput or precision of high-end industrial handlers — viscous liquids and very small volumes need careful calibration and validation. Deck layout is limited, complex protocols require real Python, and hardware maintenance is your responsibility. Automation only pays back on genuinely repetitive work; automating a protocol you run twice costs more than it saves.
