Thermo Fisher’s New InstaFlux Brings Media-on-Demand to Food Microbiology Labs

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced this week the launch of new integrated media-on-demand enrichment workflow called the InstaFlux, aimed at easing work at food microbiology laboratories running pathogen and environmental testing.

Media prep is one of the least glamorous but most resource-hungry steps in food safety testing and hated universally by anyone who has worked in laboratories. Labs typically autoclave large batches of buffered peptone water in advance, tying up staff time, bench space, water and energy. InstaFlux seeks to tackle this by producing ready-to-use media on demand, and Thermo Fisher’s numbers are notable:

• Enrichment media prepared in under 30 minutes,
• Media preparation labor cut by more than 80 percent,
• Workflow cost savings above 35 percent, and
• water and energy consumption reduced by up to 90 percent.
• Packaging waste and plastic consumption also reduced, a growing consideration for labs under sustainability mandates

Beyond throughput, the system is built for traceability. Barcode-driven workflows generate digital audit trails, and LIMS-ready data integration means results and prep records flow directly into existing lab informatics. Gravimetric dispensing covers sample workflows from 10 g to 125 g, and performance is validated to ISO standards, which matters for accredited contract testing labs and food manufacturers that cannot compromise on method compliance.

“Laboratories need solutions that help them do more with available resources,” said Claribel Purcell, interim president of microbiology at Thermo Fisher Scientific, positioning InstaFlux as part of a broader push to modernize enrichment workflows.

The launch targets contract testing laboratories and food producers, segments where testing volumes keep climbing while skilled labor remains scarce.
